Image Processing of Weather Radar Reflectivity Data: Should It be Done in Z or dBZ?

چکیده

It appears to be a common belief that processing, such as interpolation, clustering or smoothing, of weather radar reflectivity fields ought to be carried out on the reflectivity factor (Z) and not on its logarithm (dBZ). It is demonstrated here by means of a statistical study on a large dataset that, contrary to common belief, processing in dBZ is better for such applications.

Localization Methods of Weighted Centroid of dBZ on Weather-Radar Echo Maps in Vector Format

Fast generation of weather-radar echo maps in vector format and accurate localization of weighted centroid of dBZ (dBZ stands for decibels of reflectivity of a radar signal reflected off a remote object) are the basis of studying the characteristic tracking algorithms which are based on the vector echoes. The authors principally studied the approach to generating the vector echo map, and discus...

Radar estimates of rainfall rates at the ground in bright band and non-bright band events

The major error in estimating precipitation rates at the ground from radar arises from the change in radar reflectivity (Z) with height. In stratiform precipitation Z rises in the ‘bright band’, where the snow is melting, and then falls steeply in the dry ice above. In regions of vigorous convection containing graupel, the bright band is absent and the fall in Z with height is less marked. If a...

Evaluation of Collocated Measurements of Radar Reflectivity and Particle Sizes in Ice Clouds

Measured 94-GHz reflectivity in midlevel, stratiform ice clouds was compared with reflectivity calculated from size distributions determined with a particle imaging probe. The radar and the particle probe were carried on the same aircraft, the Wyoming King Air, ensuring close spatial correspondence between the two measurements. Good overall agreement was found within the range from 218 to 116 d...

Calibration of the Polarimetric Nexrad Radar Using Meteorological Signals

Regular operation of weather radar mandates frequent calibration to ensure accurate measurements. Even modest calibration errors in reflectivity factor Z and differential reflectivity ZDR may produce severe deficiencies in the quality of radar products such as rainfall estimates and hydrometeor classes. Radar users, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), rely on high quality weath...

On the relationships between lightning frequency and thundercloud parameters of regional precipitation systems

[1] Seasonal variations on lightning activity of precipitation systems over south China and Taiwan before and after the onset of Mei‐Yu have been observed by the lightning imager sensor (LIS) on board the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite. Lightning storms before Mei‐Yu onset show higher probability of lightning, higher flash rate, and larger radar reflectivity in the mixed‐p...
